The project formed the third phase of the Sunderland Strategic Transport Corridor, and has been under construction since May 2019. The road opened to traffic on Wednesday morning, with the first vehicles travelling along shortly after the ribbon was cut by Sunderland City Council leader Cllr Graeme Miller. Sunderland City Centre has a new link to the impressive Northern Spire Bridge after a dual carriageway between the two was finally completed.
